How to Use Drip Tape in the Garden

Before installing drip tape, map out your garden beds. Take into account:

• Plant spacing – Drip tape works best with evenly spaced crops such as vegetables, berries, or flowers.
• Water source location – Ensure easy access for connection.
• Row length – Drip tape is most effective in rows under 200 feet for even pressure distribution.

A clear layout helps minimize waste and ensures consistent watering.

Install the Mainline and Connectors

The mainline (often a polyethylene pipe) carries water from the source. Connectors and fittings allow you to attach drip tape securely.

• Use a filter to prevent clogging.
• A pressure regulator is recommended, as most drip tape works at 8–15 psi.
• Lay the mainline along the head of your rows for easy connection.

Lay Out the Drip Tape

Unroll the drip tape along each row with the emitters facing upward. Secure the ends with tape locks or by folding and tying.

• Space drip lines according to crop type. For example, vegetables may need one line per row, while wider beds may require two.
• Keep drip tape straight to ensure even distribution.

Test the System

Turn on the water supply and check for:

• Leaks at the connectors.
• Even flow across the entire tape length.
• Blockages in emitters.

Flush the lines before finalizing installation to remove debris.

Maintain for Longevity

Regular maintenance keeps the system efficient:

• Flush the tape and filters weekly.
• Inspect for kinks, leaks, or clogged emitters.
• Store tape properly at the end of the season if reusing.
